West Rotary Volunteer Opportunities at Van Buren Elementary School:

If you have 30-60 minutes to volunteer, consider volunteering to listen to students read aloud on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.  Use this time to also mentor the students with whom you interact.  Contact Jan Fields at Van Buren to schedule.  jfields@cr.k12.ia.us  West Rotary meeting make-ups given for each volunteer hour!

Collections for Van Buren:

A year-round project, West Rotarians are asked to collect the following and place them in the box provided near the check-in table at each Wednesday meeting.  Van Buren receives financial assistance for these!

  • Empty ink-jet cartridges
  • Old cell phones
  • Pop Tabs
  • Campbell’s Soup Labels
  • Big G Box Tops
  • HyVee Receipts (grocery and drug store)

Winter Coats:

Each fall, West Rotarians are asked to donate gently used children’s coats or donate toward the purchase of new ones for students in need.

Usually held in October, plan to walk the half mile trail on the South end of the Van Buren campus and cheer on the students!  Takes about an hour of your time, and provides support for the students.  West Rotary meeting make-ups given for each volunte

School Garden:

West Rotarians have been instrumental in providing financial assistance for the School Garden Project at Van Buren.  Volunteers are needed to assist with gardening activities with students and faculty during the spring, summer and fall.  Contact Betty Ehlinger if you are interested in assisting.  bettyge@mchsi.com  West Rotary meeting make-ups given for each volunteer hour!

Career Sharing Opportunities:

Rotarians are encouraged to participate in career sharing opportunities with students at Van Buren.  8-10 careers are usually explored by a variety of grades, so when you are approached to visit the school and tell about your career, please accept this opportunity!  West Rotary meeting make-ups given for each volunteer hour!

Betty Ehlinger is the Rotary West contact for our Van Buren Volunteers, so turn in your volunteer hours to her.
